This Shosholoza Meyl Car Carrier SCJ-6 represents a specialised vehicle used on long-distance passenger services operated by the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) under the Shosholoza Meyl brand.
Introduced as part of the modernised Shosholoza Meyl operations launched in July 2001, car carrier coaches were designed to transport passengers’ vehicles alongside long-distance passenger trains, supporting intercity travel across South Africa.
Shosholoza Meyl operates long-distance passenger train services across South Africa, traditionally connecting major cities like Johannesburg to Durban, Cape Town, East London, Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth), and Musina.
These coaches were finished in the distinctive purple, yellow, and blue Shosholoza Meyl livery, with branding typically applied in a repeating pattern along the body sides.
Car carrier SCJ-6 units formed an important logistical part of long-distance rail travel, allowing passengers to travel with their vehicles over extended routes. Many of these vehicles originated from earlier stock associated with the South African Railways (SAR) and were later adapted for use under PRASA operations.
